4 Ways to Prepare For Your HGV Theory Test

Tests are rarely a fun thing to do, for anyone. When it comes to any driving theory test, it can be a bit nerve-wracking. But if you’re training to upgrade your license so that you can drive an HGV professionally, you will need to take a new driving theory test that is specific to HGV driving technique and safety. Online Practise Tests

One of the best ways to get yourself prepared to take the HGV theory test is to take a practice test online. There are plenty of these available online, but we recommend this one, which will take you through a simulation of your real theory test from beginning to end. Although you might not know what questions will come up exactly, these practice tests are a great way to familiarise yourself with the format and identify any gaps in your knowledge ahead of the test. You can take these online tests as many times you as you like, there is no pressure to pass and your marks aren’t sent to anyone or even stored, so you can fully focus on learning and practising your knowledge.

Learn How It All Works

If it’s been a few years since you did your standard license tests, you may have a few questions about the basic format. For example, there are 100 multiple choice questions in the test, covering all the basics of safe and proficient driving of a large commercial vehicle. The hazard perception portion includes both visual and written parts, and consists of 19 videos for you to watch, with 20 potential hazards for you to identify. These videos are accompanied by 100 multiple choice questions, and you need to get 67 right in order to pass. If you want, you can split these into 2 sessions, but most people prefer to do it in one.

Hazard Perception Support

Hazard perception is one of the most important parts of your HGV theory test, and it’s the element you’ll be putting into practice most frequently when you’re on the road. Again, one of the things you can do here is to make sure you do some practise tests online to familiarise yourself with the format of the test. Above that, you need to learn what the most common mistakes are during the hazard perception portion of the test, and how to avoid making those mistakes yourself. Ask For Help!

And above all, if you are still feeling unsure or unprepared, ask someone for help!
