2 Documents You Need to Apply for a Provisional LGV Licence
If you want to become a professional lorry driver, you might think it’s a straightforward process. Especially if you already have a license to drive. After all, how different could it be? The truth is that in terms of process, it’s not especially difficult, but there are some things you need to do in a certain order if you want to complete your training correctly. And one of the first things you need to do is to apply for and secure your provisional LGV license. But what do you need to have in order to apply for your provisional LGV license, and start your journey to becoming a professional LGV driver?
Do I Need the LGV or the HGV License?
This is one point that seems to cause a lot of confusion, so we wanted to clear things up. When it comes to driving HGV’s, you do need a speciality license, and you will find this referred to as the LGV license or the HGV license. Just to complicate matters – these are exactly the same thing. The use of HGV over LGV is purely a matter of semantics, and on paper there is no difference at all. The term LGV only matters when you’re talking about light goods vehicles, like vans, rather than ‘large goods vehicles’ like lorries and tipper trucks.
Having said that, there are 2 forms you will need to get if you want to apply for an HGV license.
D2 Form
The first form you need to get is called a D2. This form is the actual application form that you fill in and send to the DVLA in order to apply for your provisional license. It works in the exact same way as applying for your standard provisional driving license, so this should be a straightforward step for you. You can order the D2 pack directly from the DVLA, or get it from your chosen training school.
D4 Form
The second form you need is called a D4 (imaginative, we know). This is something more unique to the HGV world, as it covers the medical side of things for you as a driver. It’s an approved medical form that you need to fill in part of, and then take to a doctor’s office to fill in the rest. You will need to have a physical exam with a licensed and registered doctor, and they will fill in and sign the relevant parts of the document. Once all of it is done, you then need to send it back to the DVLA for processing. You can get this form from the DVLA along with the D2 pack if you want, or you can download it directly from the GOV.UK website. Personally, we recommend you download it from the government website, purely because the website also gives you tips and information on how to fill it in – which can be useful.
Once you’ve filled in both of these forms, you can send them off to apply for your provisional license. Assuming there are no complications in the process and no red flags, either on your driving record or with your medical exam, you should receive your provisional LGV license in the post within 3 weeks.
